Crochet monster hat

Crochet Monster Hat from 'Monsters Inc'

Made this hat in 3 colors yesterday.
Pictured as many steps as possible:)
Hope it helps to recreate this amazing hat,
my boys absolutely loved and thought its fantastic and fun :)

Stitches used:
st(s) – stitch(es)
ch – chain stitch
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
Gauge: 6sts=5cm/2inches

Materials:
Hooks: 6 mm, 5.5 mm, 5 mm
N.B. I used different  hook sizes, to make different sizing for the hats.
Scissors,
Tapestry needle,Patons Fab acrylic yarn: royal blue,
salad green,
bright pink,
white,
mint,
aqua,
black,
orange,
red.
N.B. I used my scrap yarn, for all the tiny bits on this project, whatever you can find in your yarn box, that you are not going to use, can be very useful, for little eyes, bows etc

Monster hat

The salad green hat is bigger and could fit an adult or  a teenager :)

I used Hook 6mm and I doubled up my yarn.
1st Rnd: Ch 5, sl st
2nd Rnd: Ch 3, 13 dc in the ring, sl st (14sts)

3rd Rnd: Ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in next st, and so on all around, sl st (28 sts)
4th Rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st. dc in next st, 2 dc in next st and so around, sl st ( 42sts)
5th Rnd: Ch  3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, 2dcin next st and so around, sl st ( 58 sts)
6h to 13th Rnd: Ch 3, dc in next st and so around , sl st ( 58sts)
14th Rnd: Join blue yarn, doubled up as well, ch 1, sc in next st and so around, sl st, fasten off. ( 58 sts)

Ears:

 Materials:
Green yarn, not doubled up,
crochet hook 4mm.

1st Rnd: Ch 4, sl st.

2nd Rnd:  Ch 3, 13 dc in the ring.sl st (14 sts)

3rd Rnd: Ch 3, dc in next st, and so around, sl st (14 sts)
4th Rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, dc in next sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st and  so on, sl st (21 st)

N.B. you don't have to increase stitches in this round, if you want your ears slightly pointy, I made the ears without increase on the pink lady monster hat.
5th Rnd: Ch 3, dc in next st, and so around, sl st, fasten off. Leave long enough thread for stitching on ears. (21 sts)

Eye:

Materials:
Hook 4 mm.
Yarn: white, black and blue/ aqua

With black yarn:

1st Rnd: Ch 5, sl st.
2nd Rnd: Ch 1 10 sc in the ring, sl st(10 sts)

3rd Rnd: Join the blue yarn, fasten off the black yarn,
ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in next st and so on around, sl st. (20 sts)

4th Rnd: Join white yarn, fasten off the blue yarn.
Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st and so around (30sts)

5th Rnd: Ch 3 , 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st and so around, sl st, fasten off. Leave long enough thread for stitching the eye on. ( 45 sts)

N.B. I had  to increase in the last round. Depending on your circle, you may not need to increase, if you start your first round with 12 stitches, you may only need to increase twice instead of 3 times. However 2 rounds of white makes the eye bigger and more identical to the one in cartoon :)
Hope that helps.

White smile :)
Chained 20, sc in the 2nd ch , sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 6 sts, hdc in next 3 sts,  sc in last 3 sts, fasten off. Leave long enough thread to stich on the smile.

 Red lips:
With red yarn:
Chained 20, sc in the 2nd ch , sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 6 sts, hdc in next 3 sts,  sc in last 3 sts, fasten off.
Join the red yarn again in the middle of the smile, the side of the chain, because it makes nice arch, join in the 6th ch,  3dc in the 2nd st, sl st in the 2nd st, 3 dc in the 2nd st, sl st in the 2nd st , fasten off. Leave long enough thread for stitching on the lips.

Bow:
With white yarn.
Ch 12, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in next st and so until the end, turn your work, work in the back loops only. Ch 1 sc in next st in the back loops, and so on. Make 6 or more rows, fasten off.
With orange yarn, weave around the bow in the middle , to make a knot. Fasten off. Leave long enough thread to stitch the bow on.

Weave all the ends on the hat using your tapestry needle, makes it look neater and threads wont come out.

Stitch on the ears, the eye and a smile.
There it is your own monster hat.
Why not make it in lots of different colors, or stripey, or spotty, or no ears, change the color of the eye.
Change the smile etc.
So many ways, just use your imagination.
